Biography
I have been involved in powerlifting since 2014 and began my journey in strength training back in 2008. However, my engagement with the sport goes beyond personal achievements, as I have actively contributed through volunteer work. Serving as a board member of both the Ontario Powerlifting Association (OPA) and the Canadian Powerlifting Union (CPU), I have also taken on roles such as an international coach for Team Canada and volunteered at various meets. My initial entry into the sport stemmed from a desire to become strong, not just physically, but also as a means to navigate mentally challenging life transitions, such as my move to Canada when I was 13. Finding solace in having something to anticipate was truly comforting, especially during times when my family didn't have much.

Throughout my athletic career, one of my most significant accomplishments has been the privilege of being a part of Team Canada. I train at Band of Barbells, following a self-coached approach. Originally from the Philippines and Saudi Arabia, I relocated to Alberta, CA in 2006 and later moved to Ontario, CA in 2016 after graduating from the University of Calgary. I find joy in uprooting and exploring diverse locations to embrace what the world has to offer.

Beyond training and competition, I have a passion for travel and savoring life experiences (and food!) with my fiance and our three cats. Additionally, I dedicate my free time to staying abreast of the latest research in athlete psychology, performance and nutrition. Professionally, I work full-time as a strength and conditioning coach, specializing in powerlifting and athletic nutrition. In my role, as the founder and head coach at S/S Strength, my commitment is directed towards facilitating optimal performance for my athletes. Concurrently, I am in the process of pursuing my MSc (Midwifery). I am happy that I have adeptly managed both responsibilities, maintaining an equilibrium in both.

I owe much of my success to my family, particularly my hardworking mom, supportive dad, and tough brothers, who have played pivotal roles in shaping my resilience. Special mention goes to my future husband, Quentin Chan, for his unwavering support both on and off the platform.

What is your favourite lifting memory?
A standout moment in my lifting journey was on March 13, 2017, during my inaugural Nationals competition, where I won my first national title. Despite being at the 9th position after facing challenges in squats and bench, I fought in the deadlift, ultimately setting a national record. This lift secured the 1st place finish. I take immense pride in persevering through and not accepting defeat.

What is one piece of advice you have for up and coming athletes getting into strength training or strength sport?
One valuable piece of advice for athletes entering the realm of strength training or strength sports is to prioritize consistency over intensity. Building strength is a gradual process that requires dedication and regular training. Rather than pushing yourself to the limit every session, focus on establishing a sustainable routine that allows for steady progress and minimizes the risk of burnout or injury. Consistency enhances physical adaptations but also fosters a long-term commitment to your athletic journey.
